This session will present—in a question/answer format—an overview of ebizQ research findings into the various ways that open source software (OSS) enables both infrastructure and applications software to enable major IT trends such as service oriented architecture (SOA) and business process management (BPM). Panelists include representatives of the two leading industry consortia for those categories, the Linux Foundation for infrastructure software and the Open Solutions Alliance for applications. The panel will discuss opportunities, risks, and best practices for adopting Open Source technology for BPM, SOA (or both) as well as other important user needs.

Featured Speaker Bios:
Ross Altman, CTO for SOA and Business Integration at Sun Microsystems, leads the direction, development, and communication of Sun's business integration technology vision and strategy. Ross joined Sun through Sun's acquisition of SeeBeyond, the application integration and SOA development tools vendor. Prior positions include director of integrated technologies at EDS and vice president and research director at Gartner, where his research focused on the use of integration middleware to support composite applications, straight-through processing and business process management. Ross holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Rutgers University.
Dominic Sartorio is President of the Open Solutions Alliance, a non-profit consortium focusing on the interoperability and adoption of open source solutions. He is also senior director of product management at SpikeSource, a venture-funded company specializing in the test, integration, delivery and support of open source solutions. Dominic holds a masters in computer science from MIT and has 15 years of experience in web applications and application integration, including roles in engineering, pre-sales, alliances and product management at various companies including Oracle and BEA Systems.
Dennis Byron brings three decades of analyst experience to his role as
ebizQ's Community Manager for Improving Business Processes. This
community covers Business Process Management (BPM), Process Modeling,
Process Analysis, and Business Alert Monitoring (BAM), among other
topics.
As Community Manager, Byron will blog and podcast to keep the ebizQ
community fully informed on the latest news and breakthroughs relevant
to enterprise BPM. Byron will be responsible for bringing you breaking
news on BPM daily, writing feature articles and sourcing content from
other analysts, industry associations and vendors for publication on
ebizQ. Finally, each week, Byron will compile the most important news
and views in an e-mail newsletter for ebizQ's ever-growing BPM
community.
Byron is ideally suited to the job, as he has researched and analyzed all areas of IT and information-systems use for the past 30 years. Byron looks at BPM market dynamics backed up by facts, while taking into account the perspective of the IT and business person. He is a frequent speaker and moderator on business processes, which will also be one of his roles as Community Manager.
Byron was the ERP and Middleware Analyst with the Datapro division of McGraw-Hill and IDC from 1991 to 2006. In these roles, he was the primary analyst for Business Process Management. He has conducted over 500 specific information-systems case studies. He has contributed to Application Development Trends, IT Business Edge, Research 2.0 and other publications.
Byron is also the principal of IT Investment Research, which is aimed at institutional and individual investors in IT, or anyone who enjoys peering under the covers of "the financials," where large companies and emerging IPOs like to bury their most interesting facts. His main area of interest is investment opportunities in enterprise software.
Jim Zemlin is the executive director of the Linux Foundation. Zemlin previously served as vice president of marketing for Covalent Technologies, a leader in products and services for the Apache web server. Prior to that, he was a member of the founding management team of Corio, a leading enterprise application service provider that had a successful initial public offering in July 2000. Widely quoted in the press on open source and commercial software trends, Zemlin has also been a keynote speaker at industry and financial conferences including Gartner's Open Source Conference, Linux World and OSCON.
