Gartner research shows that a large number of enterprises that build service oriented architectures do not realize the benefits that they anticipated. Indeed, as our enormously popular SOA Horror Stories sessions indicate, some organizations experience a double whammy – first they fail to get the benefits of SOA, and then fixing the failed implementation costs more than the original build cost. While many of the reasons for these failures are technical, there is usually an underlying cause: lack of an enterprise view and an architected approach to the SOA initiative. Yefim Natis Yefim is a vice president and Gartner distinguished analyst in Gartner Research. Mr. Natis' research focuses on enterprise software infrastructure, including such technologies as application servers, application platform suites, integration middleware and TP Monitors. Mr. Natis also researches the fundamental software architectures, including event-driven architecture, service-oriented architecture and Web services, COM/COM+, .NET, J2EE and CORBA.
Anne Lapkin is a research vice president in Gartner Research, where she serves as a multifaceted technologist/strategist with proven expertise in the alignment of technology solutions with business goals. She is an expert in the development of complex business and technology architectures in a variety of industries, including financial services and banking, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, distribution and telecommunications. Ms. Lapkin joined Gartner in 2003.
