It's an oft-quoted phrase that the only constant in today's business world
is change. Perhaps more than ever, in the current challenging business environment,
companies must be able to adapt to rapid changes with timely and effective responses.
Agility is an increasingly important capability for any organization that is
to survive and thrive. To be agile, organizations must be able to plan effectively
and then rapidly execute those plans.
Enterprise architecture frameworks and TOGAF
For more than two decades, large organizations have been employing enterprise
architecture (EA) as a means of aligning their technology capabilities to match
the needs of the business. Organizations struggling with how to absorb technological
innovations into their systems without undue disruption have found EA methods
to be useful for managing the change and evolution of their systems.
Today, many large organizations have a dedicated EA group responsible for evaluating
technologies, defining the policies governing their deployment, and working
to ensure that new systems fit well within the organization and its mission.
An important responsibility of the EA group is to ensure that projects deploy
technologies in a manner that conforms to the principles, policies, and standards
embodied in the organization's architecture. To succeed, these architecture
groups need to orchestrate various methods and frameworks to bring a disciplined
approach to the process. Some of today's popular EA frameworks include TOGAF,
Zachman, DoDAF (also known as Department of Defense Architecture Framework),
and Gartner's Enterprise Architecture Framework.
Since 1995, The Open Group and its Architecture Forum have been developing
TOGAF. As TOGAF 9 enters the market in February 2009, the framework has emerged
as one of the leading publically available EA frameworks. TOGAF can be licensed
in two ways: organizations using TOGAF for their own internal use can license
it under a free-of-charge perpetual license; other exploitations of TOGAF require
an annual commercial license.
The members of the Architecture Forum have defined TOGAF based on best practices
contributed by The Open Group member organizations and other members of the
IT architecture community. It is a comprehensive framework that provides a development
method, reference models, and the resources and tools needed to facilitate the
establishment of an architecture program and to promote architecture development
and implementation.
