What are your priorities for 2010? Reducing IT costs? Complying with the growing
number of regulatory requirements? Improving availability and performance of
critical business services?
If your IT organization is like many, these may be your top three priorities
for the year ahead. At least that's what was reported in the 2009 IT Market
Survey of more than 400 IT professionals in Europe and the United States.
The survey, which was sponsored by BMC Software, was conducted by a technology
media company and sent to people who had registered to be contacted for market
research. It delved not only into top priorities but also IT challenges.
The results of this survey demonstrate that IT organizations need to manage
multiple initiatives effectively, despite limited funding and staff and time
constraints. An approach based on Business Service Management (BSM) can help
by enabling IT to plan, manage, and execute projects based on business priorities.
BSM is a comprehensive and unified platform for running IT. With BSM, technologies
and processes are executed efficiently to deliver new services that create more
business value while supporting existing services at lower costs.
Overview of the survey
The 400 respondents represented enterprise-level companies across a wide range
of industries. More than half of them were from companies with 10,000 or more
employees. About half held IT management or executive positions. The remainder
included consultants/systems integrators or held other IT titles.
Priorities: a closer look
The survey asked respondents to rate 15 IT objectives based on their importance
to the organization. Controlling costs headed the list, with more than one-third
of respondents ranking it as critical. Regulatory compliance and improving the
availability and performance of business services captured the number two and
three spots, respectively.
The challenging economy is forcing IT organizations to look for solutions that
address immediate concerns for improved efficiencies and cost reductions. Savvy
organizations focus on initiatives that will help grow the business when the
economy recovers.
