Paying for SOA Adoption

Eric Roch  (Chief Technologist) posted 1/31/2008 | Comments (2)
With the downturn in the economy the blank check for SOA that many organizations have operated under will likely be closed. Building a solid SOA roadmap that defines ROI will become more critical to making progress towards a migration to SOA.

I have written several articles on the approach to building a SOA roadmap and defining SOA ROI. I have worked with several clients to achieve positive ROI in a matter of months - talking in terms of years to ROI in a down economy will likely result in terminated projects.

It is refreshing to hear more industry SOA experts experiencing quick ROI. David Chappell, vice president and chief technologist for SOA at Oracle Corporation, says in his blog post More on Defending SOA, " I have always been a strong proponent of approaching SOA by identifying projects that can achieve demonstrable ROI within a matter of months, and that this needs to be accompanied by the longer term vision of where you need to get to in order to be successful. This still holds true regardless of economic conditions or IT budgets."

As Chief Technologist and National Practice Director for SOA with Perficient, Inc., I get the opportunity to work with a lot of customers implementing SOA. See my bio page for my contact information or just post a comment if you want to talk about your SOA projects.

I am curious as how you see the fit for pureplay BPM? Is it part of an overall SOA deployment or a fix for a poorly launched SOA initiative?

I see SOA as the infrastructure for BPM. Sometimes it is difficult to get the service granularity right at the low level integration points due to the systems constraints. BPM does give us the chance to smooth out the granularity at a higher level. Also, BPM is where the true value of SOA comes into play - business process improvements, automation and innovation.
