It's no secret the major ERP vendors (SAP and Oracle) are making major pushes into the integration and SOA market. Up until this year there has been little impact to the pure-play software vendors in the space.
However, this year I have seen two major SOA/ESB unplug initiatives started by large public companies in favor of the ERP vendors. One, a $32B company with a multi-year effort recently kicked off.
A couple of key considerations, the ERP vendors have taken a "good enough" approach versus a best-of-breed and for many good enough is fulfilling their requirements. Also, for an ERP centric shop their integration offerings are somewhat of a content play. Their offerings are populated with the ERP specific services and schemas (or soon will be).
This may be a troublesome trend for the pure-play ESB vendors who have to push the envelope to differentiate themselves and add significant incremental value.
As Chief Technologist and National Practice Director for SOA with Perficient, Inc., I get the opportunity to work with a lot of customers implementing SOA. See my
