BPM Series: Analyst Reports - Do they matter?

Vinayak (Head - IT) posted 1/13/2008 | Comments (5)
Global360, one of the leading providers of BPM System has made available BPM systems reports from two of the biggest IT Research and Advisory firms - Gartner and Forrester. They can be downloaded from here:

- Gartner BPM Systems Magic Quandrant 2007
- Forrester Human Centric BPM for Microsoft Platform

My suggestion. Read these reports, but make decisions based on your criteria. In case of software such as BPM Systems, quality of implementation does not only depend on the software but also on the implementation / consulting partner. BPM systems, unlike packaged applications only provide tools and infrastructure, using which process automation applications are built and run. Significant efforts are required to carry-out business requirement analysis and system development & integration. So, even if you may have chosen the best BPM system, your implementation may fail if you do not choose a competent partner in implementing the system.

I do agree as these just give an insight into the various vendors depending on some fix set of parametrs which may be pretty limited.

The best thing is that to create a vendor evaluation matrix where we benchmark vendors based on organization requirements , process modelling capabilities, linkage between model and executable etc and have the position in the magical quadrant just as another parameter.

I agree. You should use analysts' reports only as a guide to narrow down your choice of vendors and products. There are a lot of factors that will affect who you choose - complexity of processes, budget, integration with legacy systems etc. As with any other IT project, it is necessary to identify your requirements before choosing the tool.

On a side note, this is an evolving market and Gartner may not have a magic quadrant for BPMS going forward.

"Data Integration versus Application integration for an ERP Vendor" ---->

I recently met with a Software ISV in Asia Pac and discussed the integration of their business applications (including CRM, HRM and SRM) to various ERP packages, such as Oracle, SAP, etc.

Clearly, this type of integration tends to be process-centric, rather than being data centric, one would have thought. I am interested to hear from people who have strong opinions on this subject. My view is that data integration/ETL is okay for basic data synching, but not for business processes that might incorporate sales orders, invoices, customer account creation, etc, etc.

Thoughts anyone?
