10/07/2009 The Right Way To Integrate Data For Application Integration Gold Club Protected

A White Paper by David S. Linthicum

Traditional data integration approaches within the service-oriented architecture (SOA) movement – such as enterprise application integration (EAI) or enterprise service bus (ESB) – are not as effective as you might think. Data integration is extremely complex, and requires the right tool for the job. The way data integration is implemented, and the technology leveraged, can make all the difference.

EAI tools and ESBs look good on architecture diagrams, but the lack of focus on the data typically leads to disaster. Without an efficient way to transform raw data into a strategic asset, manufacturers cannot shorten product life cycles, increase customer satisfaction, and improve their response to market demands.

This David S. Linthicum LLC white paper, The Right Way To Integrate Data For Application Integration, explains:

  • The challenges a sporting goods manufacturer experiences when using the wrong data integration tools and failing to take the complexity of its data into account
  • How to understand your own data integration needs and select the right tool for the job
  • Things to consider when choosing a data integration technology, including the ability to handle larger amounts of large data sets and integrated data quality, etc.

David Linthicum is an internationally known expert in EAI, SOA, and cloud computing. He has formed or enhanced many of the ideas behind modern distributed computing including EAI, B2B Application Integration, and SOA, approaches and technologies in wide use today.

A buyer's guide for tools to help with mainframe integration leveraging SOA.

In today’s IT marketplace it is easy to think that mainframes are being marginalised more and more in companies across the world. Indeed, not so long ago the story was that the mainframe was the dinosaur, headed towards global extinction. This forecast has, of course, been thoroughly disproved, as many companies continue to gain great business benefit from their mainframe investments. Indeed, the mainframe actually seems to be staging a resurgence as people realise that its unsurpassed levels of availability, scalability and performance are still as important to business today as they were twenty years ago.

This paper considers the topic of mainframe SOA, and identifies the best-of-breed characteristics to look for in evaluating any mainframe SOA toolset, in order to help companies make the decision that will best suit their individual needs.

02/11/2009 Maximize Business Value with Right-Time Information Using Data Services Gold Club Protected
How agile is your business? It's a question you can't afford to ignore, especially since being agile is how businesses effectively thrive in today's competitive environment. Unfortunately, too many organizations lack timely access to accurate, reliable, and relevant information, that drives business agility.

Therefore, organizations are forced to rethink how they access and integrate enterprise data across business unit silos and corporate firewalls. Application-centric integration approaches—SOA, BPM, EAI, and ESB—promise agility, but fail to deliver on that promise unless complemented by a sophisticated data integration platform that delivers holistic and accurate information as a service to consuming applications and business processes, exactly at the speed of the business.

Download this compelling Informatica White Paper to learn how your IT organization can leverage the power of a sophisticated data services solution to implement an agile enterprise information management (EIM) strategy. Discover how you can maximize business agility with right-time information to increase competitive advantage, improve compliance, and reduce cost, complexity, and risk.

12/04/2008 Situational Management for SOA: Take full control of critical transaction applications Gold Club Protected

What happens when important customer orders back up before the trading deadline and won’t clear that day because of a surge of transactions caused by an unanticipated business event? Or if an unexpected weather event suddenly drives demand for your product causing a shudder throughout your supply chain.

Business success depends on knowing about situations like these immediately. If the applications your business depends on run in a SOA environment, events like these require intensive situational management.

This paper will explore:
  • An introduction of situational management for SOA and why it is essential for the deployment of critical production SOA-based applications
  • How to identify the business value and present examples to illustrate the risk and the gain
  • Examine the challenges of this kind of management, which hinder organizations as they try to move forward
12/02/2008 Data Grids as an Imperative for SOA Implementations Gold Club Protected

A basic principle of SOA is the decoupling of applications and services. This leads to increased changes to existing applications and services, as well as more frequent creation of new ones. Because more services and applications are now creating, accessing, updating, and deleting (CRUD) operational data, the ability to establish concurrent control, transactional integrity, and response performance is more important and more challenging than ever. Significantly more data is generated with CRUD operations, and the amount is unpredictable. The ability to dynamically scale the enterprise data repository and to ensure reliable availability of data services - even when the database reaches full capacity or becomes unavailable - is critical.

One of the important benefits of an SOA is the opening of legacy applications and their data stores to much wider use. An associated challenge, however, is that the legacy asset may not be architected in a way that supports the transactional demands resulting from that wider use. By providing a buffer against the legacy data store, a data grid can serve as a caching layer that scales linearly to extreme levels. IT does not have to re-architect the legacy asset; the data grid enables IT to offer broader access with high service levels.

ZapThink considers runtime SOA governance a requirement of successful SOA, greatly increasing the chances that the SOA implementation will have business value. Indeed, the lack of adequate runtime SOA governance greatly reduces the chances of success. The ability to create and monitor policies, manage performance, secure the system, and provide self-healing mechanisms means the SOA implementation will provide ongoing value through productivity benefits. However, most SOA stack vendors do not address many of the key requirements of SOA, including solution patterns around runtime SOA goverance. Considering this limitation, it’s important to address these issues with the proper technology, leveraged in the proper way. Thus, the purpose of this paper.

Is it possible for business users to design their own applications? Are Web 2.0 methods and mashups ready for the rigors of enterprise-scale computing?

In recent years, many organizations have become acquainted with the power and agility of service-oriented architecture (SOA), in which enterprise applications are abstracted as flexible, standardized and componentized services available to other systems or applications. Now, as organizations become more service enabled, they are recognizing that a new generation of approaches – often referred to as either “Web 2.0” or “Enterprise 2.0” – can now extend this flexibility and agility seen on the back end to the front end.

Quick Guide: What is Enterprise 2.0?

A lot of people are talking about Enterprise 2.0 as being the business application of Web 2.0 technology. However, there's still some debate on exactly what this technology entails, how it applies to today's business models, and which components bring true value. Some use the term Enterprise 2.0 exclusively to describe the use of social networking technologies in the enterprise, while others use it to describe a web economy platform, or the technological framework behind such a platform. Still others say that Enterprise 2.0 is all of these things. Learn More
