Extentech Inc. Offers Free Open Source SaaS Spreadsheet Mashup Tool

Extentech Inc. announced the release of ExtenXLS 360™ (E360), a Java AJAX spreadsheet mashup platform that is available through open source over the Web.

ebizQ received the following:

As organizations look to save money and increase productivity by moving to a Software-as-a-Service only model, corporate IT has become engaged in a blind race towards a closed Web --where large chunks of the world's information is amassed on the servers of a few giant advertising companies. In the recent article, "Is Cloud Computing a Benefit or Threat?" Tom Nolle states, "The notion of a cloud-computing-based Internet is the notion of an Internet that's tilting toward the very large players." The benefits of cloud computing may be clouding the vision of decision makers faced with losing physical control of their data, future service pricing changes, service downtime, unilateral changes to vital service APIs, and the loss of choice as large ad companies acquire competitors and consolidate their control over the world's data.

Eight-year Java spreadsheet veteran Extentech addresses these growing concerns head-on with their release of ExtenXLS 360, a pure-Java AJAX spreadsheet mashup platform. This new product provides the collaborative advantages of Web 2.0 applications and Software-as-a-Service offerings while ensuring that developers and end-users retain control of their data without vendor lock-in. With E360 open source Web application, organizations concerned with compliance and privacy can be confident that no keyword tracking or other unwanted third-party code is being executed in the browser.

Extentech CEO, John McMahon states, "Organizations are embracing the SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) model as an outsourced approach to integral business components such as spreadsheets and office documents -- but many have not internalized the risks of permanently consolidating critical data, IT infrastructure, and intellectual property assets onto the servers of large internet advertising companies outside of the firewall. Responding to the needs of hundreds of enterprise customers, we are proud to introduce the world's first and only open source AJAX spreadsheet that combines a powerful REST API and Java app server with an unmatched spreadsheet engine that can be run on any computer any time and can be freely and completely customized and extended at the source code level."

E360 is a turnkey Java spreadsheet mashup platform; developers can embed data-mapped spreadsheets and charts in their Web applications, allowing users to access their documents in a collaborative Web 2.0 environment. It includes advanced features such as: real time document collaboration with chat, embeddable vector charts, and intuitive Web spreadsheet with an Excel-compatible multiple-document interface.

With its flexible architecture, E360 is accessible offline or online, can be run on a corporate server or on a laptop, or both. And with the open source, standards-based JSP/Servlet Web app administrators retain full control of their data by storing document information in the database of their choice.

Extentech is releasing three versions of the product during 2008 starting with E360 Collaboration Edition -- available as a freely redistributable ad supported product. E360 Professional Edition will target Web developers and small businesses. And rounding out the lineup, E360 Enterprise Edition will boast complete access to spreadsheets from Java using the ExtenXLS SDK, and server-side data mapped spreadsheets with an embeddable AJAX charting engine. All non-free products will include a full year of unlimited phone and email support as well as all upgrades.

Quick Guide: What is Enterprise 2.0?

A lot of people are talking about Enterprise 2.0 as being the business application of Web 2.0 technology. However, there's still some debate on exactly what this technology entails, how it applies to today's business models, and which components bring true value. Some use the term Enterprise 2.0 exclusively to describe the use of social networking technologies in the enterprise, while others use it to describe a web economy platform, or the technological framework behind such a platform. Still others say that Enterprise 2.0 is all of these things. Learn More
