Misys Open Source Solutions Launches Open Carbon World Portal

05/21/2008

Misys Open Source Solutions in conjunction with several industry partners announced today at the California Climate Action Registry’s 6th Annual Navigating the Carbon World conference that it has launched a beta-version of its Open Carbon World portal for members of the carbon community interested in driving market policy.

ebizQ received the following:

Since January 2005, the carbon trading market in Europe has continued to grow under the direction of the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS), created in conjunction with the Kyoto Protocol. Now with the U.S. on the brink of instituting a “cap-and-trade system” for emissions trading, and with the rapid evolution of a domestic voluntary market, a centralized and transparent repository is needed for members of the carbon community to contribute, gather and share accurate information about the carbon market.

“By leading the effort to create the Open Carbon World portal, Misys Open Source Solutions group is demonstrating our commitment to apply open community principals to help solve significant problems,” said Bob Barthelmes, Misys executive vice president and general manager of Open Source Solutions. “Misys is uniquely positioned to apply our expertise to this important effort and we will continue to lead this and other projects to foster collaboration and facilitate growth of the carbon industry.”

“The Open Carbon World portal is the first and only resource aimed at providing a single source of clear information to help new members of the carbon community navigate a growing, but increasingly murky market,” said Donald Sunderland, vice president of Misys Open Source Solutions’ Treasury & Capital Markets division. “This solution enables carbon market advocates to find out news on policy areas in which they are interested, and provides a forum for generating dialogue among those advocates who are seeking to shape policy and resolve issues.”

The Open Carbon World portal will consist of several components designed to provide clarity, advocacy, collaboration and market creation for emissions trading. These include:

Carbon Wiki—Provides comprehensive up-to-date industry information, vetted and overseen by an editorial board made up of industry experts.

Carbon Stacks—Allows recognized industry leaders to house contributed studies and white papers.

Carbon Policy Dashboard—Provides and highlights immediate developments potentially impacting policy.

Community forums—Affords hosting capabilities for variety of industry workgroups including INCIS and open source standards.

“We recognized the importance of the Open Carbon World undertaking immediately and were among the first organizations to join,” said Peter Fusaro, chairman of Global Change Associates. “Mitigating carbon emissions is vitally important, and although there are an increasing number of efforts to make this happen, they are somewhat uncoordinated and confusing. The Open Carbon World portal will serve as a vital clearing house and organizing effort for the many organizations involved in taking on this problem.”

A lot of people are talking about Enterprise 2.0 as being the business application of Web 2.0 technology. However, there's still some debate on exactly what this technology entails, how it applies to today's business models, and which components bring true value. Some use the term Enterprise 2.0 exclusively to describe the use of social networking technologies in the enterprise, while others use it to describe a web economy platform, or the technological framework behind such a platform. Still others say that Enterprise 2.0 is all of these things. Learn More
