Sterling Commerce Joins RFID Standards Group

07/20/2004

Business integration company Sterling Commerce has “joined Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology innovators as a subscriber to EPCglobal US, an affiliate of EPCglobal Inc, a joint venture between EAN International and the Uniform Code Council. As a subscriber to EPCglobal, Sterling Commerce will help define, guide and provide support for adopting RFID standards worldwide. This work will help Sterling Commerce continue to provide leading-edge business integration solutions to its customers helping them lower their supply chain costs and increase profitability.”

Sterling added these details:

Recognizing that standards are a cornerstone for true business integration, Sterling Commerce continues its legacy of actively defining, shaping and incorporating industry standards such as the Universal Product Code (U.P.C.), EAN.UCC and RosettaNet into its product portfolio. The company expects to incorporate Electronic Product Code (EPC) standards into its flexible and modular business integration platform and its B2B solutions.

RFID technology allows companies to use automation to track and trace the physical movement of goods through their extended supply chain. A unique Electronic Product Code on each product enables real-time inventory visibility at all levels, and by integrating this information into their logistics, fulfillment and other supply chain management processes, companies can improve customer service levels, reduce labor costs, and achieve better overall inventory management.

“Our commitment to the EPCglobal network is another example of Sterling Commerce’s continued leadership in business integration standards and the supply chain market,” said Nolan Rosen,Sam Starr, president and CEO Vice President of Global Marketing at Sterling Commerce. “As a leading provider of business integration solutions including global data synchronization, a foundational element for RFID-enabled supply chains, we are focused on helping our customers achieve effective integration and seamless exchange of synchronized business information within their supply chain. We look forward to working hand-in-hand with our fellow network subscribers to ensure companies receive the full benefits that RFID and EPC have to offer in supply chains.”

"We’re pleased with Sterling Commerce’s commitment to partner with us in the commercialization of both an open and standards-based EPCglobal Network and the advancement of RFID technology overall,” said Mike Meranda, vice president, strategic planning and development for EPCglobal US. “Sterling Commerce’s participation is a strong indicator of RFID’s importance to businesses and consumers alike, and demonstrates the company is committed to helping its customers across multiple industries view their supply chains in real time, saving them time and money and enabling them to bring products and services to market quickly.”

EPCglobal, a newly formed not-for-profit organization, will develop and oversee commercial and technical standards for the EPCglobal Network, an open, global standard for real-time, automatic identification of products in a supply chain of a company in any industry, anywhere in the world.
