IBM Beefs Up developerWorks Helping Hand On SOAs, Other Matters
06/28/2004
IBM announced it has expanded its "on demand" resources for developers by making available dedicated educational materials on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) available on its developerWorks site (www.ibm.com/developerWorks).
The expansion of developerWorks Web services Zone to include content on SOA helps developers expand their scope of Web services to transform enterprise scale projects to meet changing market conditions by implementing flexible software architectures and IT processes that correlate strongly to their business processes and goals.
"IBM developerWorks is the destination for millions of developers who want to implement best practices for creating the applications needed to run on a demand business. SOA has emerged as an important model for creating flexible and agile applications that can adapt to this ever changing business environment," said Gina Poole, Vice President of Developer Marketing and Web Communities, ISV & Developer Relations. "With in-depth resources including articles, tutorials, patterns, and forums in the SOA & Web Services zone, developers can leverage the knowledge of IBM technical experts to get their jobs done."
IBM announced its own SOA toolset in late April. SOAs are collections of business processes that rely on reusable interfaces to integrate applications inside a company as well as externally with customers, partners and suppliers. IBM's SOA products and resources such as the SOA zone help customers cut costs, create new opportunities for growth and to transform enterprises into on demand businesses.
The toolset is based on WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation, a J2EE runtime integration server with support for Business Process Execution Language. Additionally it relies on Tivoli infrastructure management and security software.
New featured content on the SOA and Web services Zone include an array of technical articles and how-tos for getting started with SOA.
IBM also announced new benefits to the developer community, adding to developerWorks' comprehensive resources for open-standards based software development. Developers visiting the developerWorks web site can now get discounts on hardware, technical and computer books plus access IBM's new Career Index for job searching. All of the new features can be found on developerWorks, IBM's resource for developers at ibm.com/developerWorks.
developerWorks not only provides developers technical resources. Visitors to developerWorks also have access to deep discounts on PC's and PC accessories. developerWorks users can easily shop for desktop PCs, ThinkPad notebooks, printers, accessories and software to meet their development needs.
"Surveys with registered users of developerWorks, tell us that they appreciate easy access and added benefits for belonging to the community.
They want resource that address all their needs - including career opportunities as well as discounts on IBM products and development books."
said Gina Poole, Vice President, Developer Marketing and Web Communities, ISV & Developer Relations. "developerWorks is listening and working to answer their needs."
Also recently added to the site, developerWorks now also provides developers easy access to thousands of the leading computer and technology books at a new dedicated developerWorks Bookstore. developerWorks carries about 20,000 books on subjects like Java, XML, Linux and Web Architecture, Websphere etc at a standard 30% discount. The Bookstore provide weekly specials at a 40% discount for the best selling books recommended by our technology editors.
Developers can select books by accessing: http://devworks.krcinfo.com to find such titles as Head First Java, Running Linux, Security Warrior, Wireless hacks and Information Architecture for the World Wide Web.
Slated to launch in July, Career Index will provide developerWorks users an added benefit by providing them a resource to view IBM related product career opportunities posted by companies looking for developers with skills like DB2 Administrators and WebSphere developers. Both IBM customers and Business Partners are constantly looking to fill development team positions with IBM related skills and the Career Index provides them a way to easily recruit new candidates. Once a job hunter clicks on a job posting that interests him or her, the Career Index site provides detailed information on related job openings. developerWorks will use an RSS feed to send updates.
