LogicLibrary Launches Open Source License Compliance Module; Teams With Serena
05/26/2004
LogicLibrary, a provider of software asset management tools, introduced the Logidex Open Source License Compliance Module. “By building upon Logidex’s ability to track and manage open source components throughout the application development lifecycle,” the vendor says, “the Logidex open source module allows an enterprise to analyze its use of open source components to help determine issues for compliance with existing license agreements and to develop appropriate practices moving forward.”
LogicLibrary added the following details:
Concerns about open source license compliance and related liabilities have grown over the past several months as the number of high-profile open source-related litigations has increased. While the various legal questions remain unsettled, businesses today must consider the large number of licensing questions that accompany the use of open source components in pending development initiatives. As part of Logidex’s asset acquisition workflow, the open source module enables businesses to store, track and manage metadata, including a compliance checklist, for open source components. In this way, Logidex helps sensitize enterprises to the compliance issues associated with use of open source software.
“As companies deploy open source components across an ever-growing variety of environments and use cases, it is imperative that the variety of licensing, software maintenance and deployment issues involved be carefully managed,” said Greg Coticchia, CEO of LogicLibrary. “Logidex is the only software asset management solution that enables businesses to comprehensively track and manage open source components throughout reuse, Web services and service-oriented architecture (SOA) initiatives.”
Logidex is the industry’s premier collaborative software development asset (SDA) management solution for development, integration and service-oriented architecture projects. In addition to unique open source license compliance capability, Logidex is also the only software asset management product that offers federated library support, model-based searching, out-of-the-box assets, measurements and metrics, and features tight integration with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, Eclipse, IBM WebSphere Studio and IBM Rational XDE.
“Software licensing is far from a simple task, and having a tool to manage compliance with not only commercial licenses but also the various open source licenses and their complexity can be invaluable,” said Al Potter, manager, network security labs for ICSA Labs®, a division of TruSecure® Corporation. “The advantages of open source can be quickly erased by the costs, financial and otherwise, of dealing with licensing compliance issues. Current prominent litigation has demonstrated clearly that knowing positively a project's ongoing license compliance status is critically important.”
LogicLibrary worked closely with the law firm of Rivkin Radler LLP to develop the open source license module. Rivkin Radler is one of the nation's leading law firms, providing a wide range of legal services to a diverse group of clients, from privately held companies to the Fortune 500.
“Concern over open source licensing has created a climate of doubt that is not conducive to efficient business operations,” said Paul Rubell, a partner in Rivkin Radler’s Corporate & Commercial Practice Group. “By addressing open source licenses, LogicLibrary makes it easier for business managers, architects and developers to identify potential issues and do what they do best¬create leading-edge applications and Web services that support critical corporate objectives.”
Separately, LogicLibrary announced a strategic partnership with Serena Software (Nasdaq: SRNA), a supplier of software that automates change to enterprise applications.
