ApplTop Upgrades Product That Enhances Oracle e-Biz Suite

ApplTop Solutions says its flagship product, ASL*Form, a productivity tool for the Oracle E-Business Suite, has added a number of "major new features added to the latest release that help businesses make the most out of their investment in Oracle technology.

“Since its initial release, we have continually improved and added to the product to ensure that we can offer groundbreaking software that offers many benefits to any business that utilizes the Oracle E-Business Suite,” the vendor says.

A feature in the latest release (R2i v2.3.1) is the PRECOMPUTE Directive, which takes advantage of an Oracle database feature that ApplTop notes is “very much underutilized, the Materialized View.

“We have found that many users of ASL*Form are creating front-ends to an Oracle Applications-based data warehouse or core Applications Business Intelligence system where the data presented by the ASL*Forms is based on a very large volume of typically summarized information; before the current release of ASL*Form, these kinds of solutions could suffer with data retrieval performance issues in that the volume of data is just so huge that collating all the information could take a very long time. In this scenario we would usually recommend the use of a Materialized View but often the response to this was ‘a Materialized what?’ Taking this typical response in hand, we have added new functionality that means ASL*Form can take control and automatically create any underlying Materialized Views that are required thus ensuring ASL*Form query performance is always at its best.

“This new functionality helps keep solutions wholly within ASL*Form and reinforces ApplTop’s position as a customer-focused business. The new PRECOMPUTE Directive means that ASL*Form, standing on it own, can solve many more types of real business issues that many Oracle E-Business sites often face.

“A recent example of using this new functionality saw performance improvements of over 99%; we took a solution where the underlying query was taking over 10 minutes to return any data; using the PRECOMPUTE functionality we got this down to less than 2 seconds.

“The new functionality works by predetermining the results of the query at a specified interval or time. ApplTop say that so long as the data does not need to be completely real-time then the new functionality will help in many different scenarios.

“Another major new addition to the feature list that was also borne out of a client specific request is an improved security model. ASL*Forms’ ease of use and incredibly shallow learning curve means that the skills required to become productive with the product are minimal; this in itself means anyone from developers to functional consultants to power users can use the product effectively within a matter of minutes.

“If the ASL*Form builder tools are to be deployed to Power Users then the old security model could prove to be inadequate for some businesses. We have taken the old security layer built into ASL*Form and completely revamped it to ensure that the IT department can safely and securely deploy ASL*Form builder tools to non-technical, non-IT personnel. The new security model is very simple but also very powerful in that it ensures IT (or whoever owns ASL*Form) remains in complete control as to who can access what data. This new functionality means ASL*Form builder tools can be used by an even wider audience than previously possible.”
