Flashline Intensifies Support Of Reusable Asset Spec

12/09/2003

Flashline, a provider of software asset management for enterprise programs, says the Flashline Registry is accessible as a Reusable Asset Specification (RAS) repository. The Flashline Registry manages asset metadata in the RAS format, enabling users to search for and retrieve RAS assets from the Registry without leaving their development environment. Through its ongoing work with IBM Rational on product integrations and support for the RAS industry standard, says Flashline, it is “helping organizations gain the benefits of reuse throughout their software development initiatives.”

According to Flashline, “The new capability enhances Flashline's existing IBM Rational XDE adapter by integrating with the RAS Repository Explorer, an asset search program that is part of XDE. When XDE users search for RAS assets managed in the Registry, they have direct access not only to RAS metadata, but also to extended metadata provided by the Registry. The RAS metadata describes assets, such as code, frameworks and Web services, in a standard way that enables more reuse. The extended metadata provided by Flashline can include support models and information, asset relationships, taxonomies, and other metadata that help users find and evaluate assets. The Flashline Registry gives organizations an enterprise-wide view of all software assets, accelerating reuse across projects and throughout an organization. Users can also import a RAS asset from the Registry directly into a project in their XDE workspace.”

"By making these capabilities available to its customer base of Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, Flashline is helping to speed the adoption of RAS as an industry standard," says Dr. Richard Soley, Chairman and CEO of the Object Management Group (OMG). "Creating an industry standard for reusable assets is an important factor for organizations to succeed with software reuse. Flashline's contributions to and support for RAS are advancing its industry acceptance."

"Flashline is unlocking the value of RAS by making RAS assets available beyond projects and to an entire enterprise," states Charles Stack, Founder and CEO of Flashline. "As a RAS repository, we are also giving developers a way to quickly locate and understand assets consistent with the XDE workflow and interface, bringing asset reuse directly into their familiar project environment. These capabilities advance our commitment to support important industry standards such as RAS."

Flashline is a co-contributor of RAS to the OMG and has been involved with RAS since its inception. During the OMG Technical Meeting in London in November, members voted on and approved the issuance of the RAS Request for Comment (RFC). In addition, Flashline is a premier partner in IBM PartnerWorld for Developers.

Quick Guide: What is Enterprise 2.0?

A lot of people are talking about Enterprise 2.0 as being the business application of Web 2.0 technology. However, there's still some debate on exactly what this technology entails, how it applies to today's business models, and which components bring true value. Some use the term Enterprise 2.0 exclusively to describe the use of social networking technologies in the enterprise, while others use it to describe a web economy platform, or the technological framework behind such a platform. Still others say that Enterprise 2.0 is all of these things. Learn More
