Intalio announced the acquisition of Webtide, the team behind the Jetty open source Java application server.

Jetty is currently used on millions of web servers, and powers products such as Cisco SESM, Google AppEngine, Google GWT, HP OpenView, IBM Tivoli NetView, Oracle WebLogic Business Connect, Sybase EAServer, and Yahoo! Zimbra.
In order to consolidate its enterprise cloud computing platform, Intalio selected Webtide over alternative vendors, for several reasons. First, Jetty is quickly becoming the most popular Java application server, with deployments on 289,237 public web servers vs. 411,028 for Tomcat (Source: Netcraft). Second, thanks to its small memory footprint, Jetty has established itself as the standard Java application server for the leading providers of public cloud computing services, such as Google with Google AppEngine and the Google Web Toolkit (GWT), and Yahoo! with Hadoop (now an Apache project) and Zimbra. Third, Jetty provides both an asynchronous HTTP server and an asynchronous HTTP client, and therefore supports scalable implementations of both ends of protocols such as Bayeux, XMPP, and Google Wave. Lastly, Jetty can be embedded in small and mobile devices. Today, Jetty runs on J2ME and Google Android, and it will power many new smartphones that will be released later this year by several handset manufacturers.
Jetty has become the most popular application server for embedding into other open source projects, including ActiveMQ, Alfresco, Eclipse, Felix, FUSE, Geronimo, GigaSpaces, JBoss, JRuby, Liferay, Maven, Nuxeo, OFBiz, Tungsten, and Ubuntu. Jetty is also used as a standard Java application server by many open source projects for cloud computing, including Eucalyptus and Hadoop.

This acquisition also brings Intalio at the forefront of the cloud computing revolution, with Intalio|Jetty powering some of the most widely used infrastructure technologies for cloud computing, including Apache Hadoop, Eucalyptus, and Google AppEngine."
Webtide is self-funded and profitable, has 10 employees, and maintains offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Philippines. Webtide will be managed as a fully-owned subsidiary, while Adam Lieber will join Intalio as Chief Open Source Officer. In this capacity, he will manage Intalio's open source initiatives, such as Apache Buildr, Apache ODE, Eclipse BPMN, Jetty, and Tempo.
Jetty will remain an independently managed open source project lead by Webtide’s founders Greg Wilkins and Jan Bartel, and licensed under the Apache License and Eclipse Public License. Webtide will continue to support all existing customers. Intalio will also distribute and support the Hightide open source application server, which includes the Jetty scalable web container, the JettyPlus JNDI framework, the Atomikos XA transaction manager, the ActiveMQ messaging service, and the Cometd Ajax messaging framework.
"With Webtide becoming part of Intalio, Jetty is now poised to become the standard Java application server for cloud computing," said Adam Lieber, CEO of Webtide. For example, Intalio is now funding the development of a Jetty-powered implementation of the Google Wave Federation Protocol, which we expect to release very soon."
