Juniper Networks Introduces Data Center Infrastructure Solutions

11/10/2008

Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today introduced its new Data Center Infrastructure Solutions designed to advance IT initiatives for data center consolidation, server virtualization and sustainable information technology.

ebizQ received the following:

The Juniper Networks Data Center Infrastructure Solutions can significantly reduce network complexity and total cost of ownership by up to 52 percent in capital expenditures, up to 44 percent in power, up to 44 percent in cooling and up to 55 percent in rack space in the data center. With Juniper, customers can achieve greater operational simplicity, agility and efficiency for accelerating the deployment of new applications and services.

Industry leaders increasingly depend on their information infrastructure to accommodate growth and maximize revenue. To remain competitive, they need to provide a growing number of users with robust applications and services while lowering costs. In the data center network, however, these businesses are constrained by legacy architectures that cannot scale with increased information processing demands and energy requirements. Juniper uniquely addresses these challenges with its Data Center Infrastructure Solutions, which provide a fast, reliable and secure environment that paves the way for the consolidation, automation and virtualization of business processes.

Juniper’s data center approach, which includes switching, routing and security technologies, all running on a single network operating system – JUNOS® software – is supported by strategic partner IBM and customers including AdvancedMD Software Inc., AOL, Commerce Bank and Laboratory of Neuro Imaging at UCLA. For customer and partner video testimonials, please see www.juniper.net/datacenter.

“The ubiquity of connectivity coupled with the ability of network bandwidth to support a predictable user experience is enabling IT to modify their data center architectures. New technologies allow organizations to gain the benefits of IT centralization, but exacerbate complexity. Current market challenges require businesses to add more agility to the data center and it is clear that the network must play a critical role,” said Cindy Borovick, research vice president at IDC. “Juniper’s approach provides a path for operational innovation, allowing businesses to provision services quickly and cost-effectively to meet the demands of the new data center.”

“Juniper has a proven track record in enabling high-performance businesses to scale their networks without compromise,” said Mike Banic, vice president of marketing, Ethernet Platforms Business Group at Juniper Networks. “We are now extending the expertise we have gained from mission-critical deployments worldwide into the data center. Our solutions empower businesses, offering them choice and the ability to drive down the cost and complexity of managing their data center networks, which enable them to realize the fullest return on investment in technologies such as server virtualization.”

Lowering Total Cost of Ownership with Operational Simplicity, Agility and Efficiency

Juniper’s Data Center Infrastructure Solutions will help enterprises, service providers and government agencies lower their total cost of ownership by allowing them to a build a network architecture that provides the operational simplicity, agility and efficiency that high-performance businesses need to keep pace with escalating demands and increasingly complex data center environments.

  • Simplicity: Juniper simplifies data center network design with the combination of the EX-, MX- and SRX-series products to consolidate services and data center switching layers resulting in significant capital cost savings. Juniper’s Virtual Chassis technology in the EX 4200 series Ethernet switches combined with line-rate 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) performance on its chassis-based products can significantly reduce the number of interswitch links and the amount of equipment required in the data center by up to half. These chassis-based products include the upcoming EX 8200 series Ethernet switches and current MX-series Ethernet Services Routers with advanced layer 2 and 3 network virtualization.

The Juniper Networks SRX services gateways further consolidate the sprawl of service-specific security appliances in legacy network architectures. A typical security solution requiring more than 12 separate appliances can be reduced to a single platform with the SRX requiring less than one-third the rack space and yet delivering up to six times the performance. By natively integrating and optimizing multiple services into one platform, the SRX gives businesses the flexibility to readily “turn-on” new VPN, firewall and intrusion prevention services without sacrificing performance or security.

  • Agility: Juniper enables customers to achieve unmatched carrier-grade reliability and operational agility by streamlining provisioning, management, troubleshooting and maintenance of the data center infrastructure on a single management framework and operating system. The Juniper Networks Network and Security Manager (NSM) is able to manage elements across Juniper’s routing, switching and security portfolio, enabling high-performance businesses to increase security, reduce cost and realize significant operational gains.

For the first time, with JUNOS software, customers can reduce dozens or more complex network operating systems to a single OS across the routing, switching, and network services infrastructure, automating network operations and minimizing complexity and risk while reducing operating costs by up to 25 percent.

Juniper's J-Care Technical Services, enabled by Advanced Insight Solutions (AIS), effectively puts a technical-support engineer in every device that runs JUNOS software, taking hours or days out of typical response times. Juniper’s proactive technical support streamlines operations across the full routing, switching and network services infrastructure, enabling businesses to significantly lower operating expenses and increase availability.

  • Efficiency: Juniper collapses layers and consolidates appliances to make the data center network more efficient to operate and manage. Juniper’s simplified approach can also lower power, cooling and space requirements to significantly reduce customers’ total cost of ownership. A Juniper analysis of a typical mid-sized data center build-out with 3,000 servers and 125Gbps of firewall service processing revealed that a Juniper Data Center Infrastructure Solutions deployment could reduce the number of core networking devices by a factor of five, enabling customers to save up to 52 percent in capital expenditures, up to 44 percent in power, up to 44 percent in cooling and up to 55 percent in rack space in their data center, compared to currently available legacy networks. The significance of such savings can grow as the demand on the data center increases over time.

Partnership with IBM Helps Customers Extend the Value of Their Data Center Networks IBM and Juniper share a common vision to continually evolve IT as a strategic element of business success. As global alliance partners, IBM and Juniper are focused on delivering best-in-class solutions to their mutual customers.

“IBM’s New Enterprise Data Center is an evolutionary new model for efficient IT service delivery that guides customers through a progression of simplified, shared and dynamic infrastructure, with each stage delivering value that allows businesses to provision new services quickly and cost effectively without added complexity and risk,” said IBM’s Jim Comfort, vice president, Systems and Technology Group. “Juniper’s approach to simplifying data center information infrastructure tightly aligns with our New Enterprise model, and helps customers progress to the shared and dynamic phases of the model.
