Integrate, Then Virtualize -- In That Order

Lori MacVittie just posted her cautionary note that hybrid cloud computing is going to require plenty of integration to make things work.

Loraine Lawson also looks at the lay of the land, and questions whether virtualization paves the way to better integration, or integration paves the way to virtualization. It's more likely the latter case, she says. And there's plenty to think about there: "Virtualization could be hindered by a lack of integration across storage, backup, networking, security, and management functions in virtualized environments," she says.

Some tips from Loraine's colleague Arthur Cole:

  • Accommodate configuration, capacity planning and real-time automation.
  • Adopt new new management approaches designed for virtual architecture.
  • Move to lifecycle management approach
  • Integrate systems management across all enterprise domains
  • Recognize importance of virtual management and automation.
