John Footen of National TeleConsultants reports on his progress introducing SOA to the broadcast industry. Industry working groups, including the Media Services Architecture Group (MSAG) in the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) as well as the EBU CP (Common Processes) and NP (Networked Production) groups, have been engaged in education efforts to "help the media industry understand what is at stake and why SOA is important."
The broadcast industry is populated with proprietary systems, Footen says. and the working groups are soliciting service descriptions from industry members, as well as to describe how their framework would work with three very basic services: "media transform," "media
move," and "media capture."
"FIMS is seeking visions of how the industry breaks down from its highest level processes to the most basic atomic services. This decomposition will inform the direction and prioritization of the work of the task force." A preliminary report is expected to be issued next month.
It's interesting to hear about an industry-level effort to bring the standards and uniformity of service orientation to a wide range of organizations.
