'SOA as a Service': An Idea Whose Time Has Come?

All those years spent developing an SOA skill base and infrastructure are really paying off now in the cloud era. And in the process, interest in cloud adoption is driving renewed interest in service oriented architecture practices.

That's the prognosis of Dr. Chris Harding, the Open Group's SOA deep thinker, who recently wrote up an analysis of the evolving relationship between SOA and cloud. SOA and cloud are fueling each other, he says.

"SOA requires major investments in equipment, skills and culture change," he writes. "The SOA skills and culture learned in the process will also help an enterprise to take advantage of Cloud. In return, Cloud will help the enterprise overcome the barriers of finance and risk that hinder adoption of SOA."

And, the two paradigms have something else in common: they need support from the organization. "These ideas are more than one-hit wonders: they need investments in equipment, skills and culture change that take years to provide a good return on your investment."

Chris even proposes a mechanism that will fill the gaps left by Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS): "SOA as a Service."

He observes since SOA relies on expensive investments, SOA as a Service may help organizations service-orient on an incremental, pay-as-you-go basis. "Cloud can remove that barrier and avoid that dilemma by making SOA platforms instantly available and paid for per-use rather than by an up-front investment," he says.

In this blog (formerly known as "SOA in Action"), Joe McKendrick examines how BPM and related business and IT approaches can promote business transformation.
