Forrester has made it official: Complex Event Processing is now a vibrant market category in its own right. According to a report in DestinationCRM, the consultancy says heavy demand drove it to issue a report on the state of the CEP market -- a growing one at that.

Mike Gualtieri, senior analyst at Forrester and author of the report, says the market has a number of strong players -- including Progress Apama, Aleri, StreamBase Systems, TIBCO Software, IBM, Oracle, Coral8, UC4, and EsperTech.A couple of months back, I had the opportunity to join David Olson, director of CEP product marketing for Progress Software's Apama unit, along with Brenda Michelson, principal with Elemental Links and also contributor here at ebizQ, in a rousing roundtable discussion on the impacts of event processing in what has been a very eventful year for businesses. (Listen to the full Event Processing Roundtable here. Read the full transcript here.)

Wonder when he did his research, Aleri & Coral8 merged back in March.

Microsoft is starting to get serious about CEP (beyond just patent hogging) with the preview of SQL Server StreamInsight.

And of course, there are some good niche players such as RuleCore.
