Organizations that Will Thrive Recognize Value of Enterprise Architecture, SOA

In today's rough-and-tumble economy, there's a tendency for executives and managers to panic, and cut everything in sight. However, a well-crafted enterprise architecture effort that incoporates SOA, ITIL, and other long-term visionary approaches is an asset that needs to be sustained, through good times and bad.

As enterprise architect extraordinaire Todd Biske puts it, "most of these efforts try to achieve ROI through cost reduction by eliminating redundancy in the enterprise, which is exactly what is needed today!"

Todd compares many knee-jerk cost-cutting attempts as the equivalent of going on a diet by not eating for a week. Of course, the key is to keep eating healthy foods. As Todd explains:

"The whole point of Enterprise Architecture, SOA, and many of these other strategic IT initiatives is to allow IT to be more agile- to respond more quickly to changes in the business objectives...  the best survivors of this meltdown will be organizations that don't go on a starvation diet, but instead simply recognize that their priorities and goals have changed and execute without significant disruption to the way they utilize IT."

Here's where EA, SOA, and ITIL can really shine, he says. "If EA has been adding value all along, then you'll probably be a strategic asset that will help your organization weather the storm."

In this blog (formerly known as "SOA in Action"), Joe McKendrick examines how BPM and related business and IT approaches can promote business transformation.
