May 25, 2006Web Services Security - the missing link?
It's widely accepted that the web services market is smoking hot. Just check out these numbers -
IDC predicts that SOA/Web Services market will grow to $21.6B by 2009...yes, 21.6B. OK, IDC does get carried away from time to time but even if they get this by wrong by a factor of 50%, it's still a huge number.
But what do the enterprise users have to say about this? Here's a sample -
87 of top 100 CIOs polled by Goldman Sachs said that they were already deploying web services in their organizations.
wait, there's more...
In an Intelligent Enterprise survey this year, 42% of respondents endorsed SOA as the template for application design for the foreseeable future.
But then you get to this -
In the same survey, the same number of respondents cited security as a chief concern...29% even limited deployment due to security concerns
Does security matter for web services market to reach full potential? In view of those and other results, I'd argue "yes". You could say for many CIOs and chief architects, it's the missing link in getting web services fully designed, developed and deployed. If that's the case, let's look at what web services security is all about, starting with a look at web application security and then progressing to security for a distributed web services or SOA implementation.
