Gee, I wonder if it's too late to submit an application to trademark the use of "aaS" acronyms. According to a report in Washington Post, Dell has submitted an application to trademark the term "cloud computing."

I found this to be rather odd. I don't know when the "cloud computing" buzz word came into use, but Wikipedia claims that "The Cloud" has been a metaphor for the Internet for years, and on further searching, this blog entry claims that the phrase was actually popularized by Google. Why, then, should Dell be allowed to trademark it?

Not that I particularly care. If the term ends up owned by Dell, someone will come up with some other buzz phrase for the general concept. There's not exactly any shortage of buzz words in the IT industry.
