December 19, 2007On SaaS, Mashups, and Web 2.0
In ebizQ's recent SOA in Action virtual conference, panelists Joe McKendrick, Dana Gardner, and Phil Wainewright engaged in an interesting discussion on how SOA and Web 2.0 relate with regard to mashups, SaaS, and collaboration.
All the panelists made interesting points during the discussion, including some comparison of Web 2.0 cultures as being more "guerilla" whereas SOA was more of an IT department effort that ended up in companywide implementations.
Addressing SaaS specifically, moderator Joe McKendrich wondered if an SOA operation was similar to an internal SaaS. Phil Wainewright pointed out that the majority of SaaS providers still do per user or per month subscriptions because that was simple to administer, but that for people running a business, administering SOA like a SaaS application could get complicated.
