Lumen Software Launches Commercial Open Source SaaS Portal

Lumen Software, a leading provider of commercial open source Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and portal solutions, today announced its flagship platform, Lumenation, and the Lumenation Software Development Kit (SDK), are available immediately for free download. The products give PHP and AJAX developers a way to rapidly build, deploy, manage, and sell SaaS applications.Lumen's SaaS platform is in use by more than 200 commercial customers with over 150,000 users of on-demand applications. Lumen's focus on the world's 5 million PHP developers validates the work of industry pioneers SugarCRM, developers of a large CRM application written in PHP, and Zend, creators of the world's most popular PHP application platform. As a member of the educational community our district has experienced several changes in technology over the past several years. Having a variety of platforms and applications can be a nightmare in compatibilty and training. Our solution is to be as web-based as possible. Lumen has provided us with a way to combine all the different sources for applications and data onto one desktop that can be customized for the particular group of users. Parents can easily find everything they need, teachers now have one location that provides them with all their requirements, administrators have the information at their finger tips. We find that our teachers have more time to teach and spend less time on tasks that take them away from the students.

We too have been using Lumen's product Lumenation. From our experiences we have noticed that the end user is very comfortable with the interface. One really forgets that the applications are not hosted on the local computer. It's is really remarkable to what can be done (securely) inside a web browser. My personal experience with this is some what unique. I live out where my only access from my home is through "dial up" and I am able to use lumenation productively from home. It has become an integral part of our day to day work.

The Lumen portal is amazing. It looks and works just like a Windows desktop. These browser desktops can be assigned to groups or individuals with access to just the applications they need. Several applications can be run simultaneously with just a click to move between them. We use several general applications like the calendar, survey, and help desk applications as well as some specifically written for schools. Also amazing is how rapidly full applications can be written and implemented within the environment. Lumen support has been excellent.
