Microsoft latest acquisition AssetMetrix will be SaaS?

Microsoft plans to continue running the service of its latest acquisition, AssetMetrix, for the next six to nine months as it mulls product and service options for its new software asset management (SAM) offering.

Felicity McGourty, director of product management and marketing for Microsoft's Windows and Enterprise Management Division, said the company is exploring the logistics and legalities involved in productizing the AssetMetrix SAM tool. However, an online service is likely, she said.

"The online service is a potential offering if we continue it as a software service, but that has not been determined yet,"

Steve O'Halloran, co-founder of AssetMetrix and a former company executive, said although there could be ramifications for customers and partners, he thinks Microsoft is more interested in the technology than the customer data.

"I'm not sure if Microsoft will operate it as software as a service. But over the five years I was involved with [AssetMetrix], there were customers who said, 'No way would their inventory be held by a third party while others had no issue with it,a " O'Halloran said. "Customers would ask us, aWhat are you going to do with our data? Are you giving it away to Microsoft?a I guess we did--in a way."

Oracle has rolled out its CRM On Demand Release 10, upgrading the customization features, deepening list management functionality and introducing additional vertical expertise. Typically, releases of Software as a Service (SaaS) applications tend to be more frequent than enterprise software upgrades -- and thus comparatively routine. This release stands out to a certain extent, because it is the first release of Siebel's On Demand application since Oracle closed its acquisition of the company earlier this year.

Are you stuck in the dark ages?

Bob Fabbio CEO Cesura Inc feels the biggest obstacle in on-demand marketplace is people think they have the right set of tools and processes in place to know whether they are delivering reliable services to their end-users. And this is just categorically false. Stuck in the dark ages, on-demand businesses are using management and analytics tools and from the 1980as and 1990as. While none of these tools were designed to solve the problems of today in the on-demand marketplace. some fundamental questions from him that will help you gauge how certain your on-demand business.

  • Accurately tell what experience your on-demand users are actually having?

  • Determine which specific on-demand users are disrupted as soon as it happens?

  • Easily gain insight into what caused an intermittent disruption that impacted one or more users?

  • Determine, with little effort and time, why on-demand users are experiencing poor performance and what to do about it?

  • See the actual time that various on-demand users are disrupted over some historical period and why?

  • Quickly activate any other offering in days and deliver immediate value?

  • Quantify the financial impact to your on-demand business using the tools and processes you have today?

  • Reliably shorten and eliminate the intermittent problems that users experience with your on-demand applications? And quantify itas financial impact?

Do you know Microsoft well ?

Interesting blog post from Sandy Kemsley, ebizQ Blogger ,The Economist Spot the dinosaur discusses the world of online software and what Microsoft is doing -- quite late in the game -- to join the party. I made a interesting comment in that blog post. Most of the articles we see on the web and print report that Microsoft is quite late in the game for SaaS,Actually Microsoft was actually offering it's products as a service through it's channel partners for product like Dynamics(CRM) and through ISV's(product developed in MS Platform). They even provide product discounts and hosting services if the product is a service, they are doing this for some years now. As analysts and media is watching Google(Writely) and Salesforce,Microsoft is slowly building a strong foundation for SaaS by utilizing channel partners and existing distribution channel. I feel all other companies are late in this game. Here is one recent feature article from Infoworld Microsoft taps partners for Office Live applications .
