September 24, 2007Internal Threats the Focus of Data Protection
In a recent survey released by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, and featured at Search Security, said that, while two-thirds of the respondents reported external security breaches in the form of viruses, worms and phishing attacks, the biggest worry now is insider attacks. 91 percent of those surveyed said they were concerned about employees, and 80 percent cited employees as the reason for informational security failures.
"Security used to be a cost thing and in many areas of IT we needed to reduce our costs," Michelle Stewart, CISO at AirTran Airways. said. "A lot more risk was accepted than there is today because of the publicity of the data breaches."
It’s not too surprising then that the survey found that pretty much all of the respondents reported increased security budgets. But of those, 35 percents still said that their spending on security was still lagging behind business needs and only 20 percent said they had the skills and competencies to deal with their security requirements.
"Due to the increased number of high-profile losses or theft of customer data, data protection has been the subject of intense attention over the past 18 months," Deloitt said.
From all this, look for security spending and to increase further.
