LogicBlaze Upgrades FUSE Open Source SOA
LogicBlaze made a big splash in late March with the release of their FUSE open source SOA runtime environment -- and they've just announced a new 1.2 version of FUSE that's designed tocompete even more strongly with commercial SOA solutions.
We talked to Rob Davies, Logic Blaze's vice president of product development, about FUSE's particular features and the evolving balance between open source and traditional SOA vendors.
"We want to compete in all the levels and have the same functionality that commercial vendors do," Davies said.
Davies also shared some interesting case studies that show considerable economies of scale for companies -- and detailed his company's customer support plans.
"We are seeing in the enterprise space, more and more companies are using open source solutions in mission-critical applications," he added.

Tungsten: A Complete Open Source Middleware Solution?
"We think we have a pretty unique product," WSO2 co-founder Paul Fremantle says of his company's new Tungsten application server package. He calls it "the first pure open source SOA application server."
Tungsten was built around XML and Web Services from the ground up to facilitate service-oriented architectures, rather than just act as a Web application server, Freemantle notes.
"It was designed from the ground up to be based around integration ... but we think there's a new challenge, which is not just to be Web friendly, but to be integration friendly," he adds.
User cases range from simple exposure of Java code as XML or Web Services to abilities far beyond integration application servers.
Such potential recently drew a $4 million investment from Intel Capital.
"That's about a shared vision with Intel," Fremantle explains. "We actually believe that the XML middleware space actually scales beyond just beyond integration application servers."
Fremantle says the funding will be applied to new solutions that will scale across Java, C and .NET. The ultimate goal is "a complete open source XML middleware solution."

We spoke to iTKO’s co-founder and Chief Scientist John Michelsen about how the “Three C’s” work together.
And speaking of interdependence, iTKO recently joined SOA Links, where competing vendors in the space have joined forces to provide interoperable SOA solutions so that customers can mix-and-match offerings that best suit their needs. Michelson detailed who the partnership is greatly benefiting both companies and consumers.

An Open Source EMail AntiSpam and Compliance Solution
When Microsoft bought and discontinued RAVAnitvirus in 2003, it threw vendor RAEInternet for a loop. But owner Mike Katz re-invented his company -- and restored a lost revenue stream into a torrent -- by combining open source components into the "Mail Procession Platform" (MPP). The easy-to-configure platform's been flying off the shelves -- and no less an authority than The New York Times recently took notice.
