March 23, 2007Business Intelligence and Business Rules
Ron Ross, author of a well known book on business rules, pointed me to an old article written by David Straus about a year ago - Business Intelligence and Business Rules Make Great Bedfellows. I must have missed this when it came out but it is a good read. David outlines a number of ways in which BI and Business Rules can be powerful in combination. I agree with him that demonstrating compliance is must easier with business rules (I wrote an article on this for ebizQ here) and that BI is essential to reporting and analyzing the transactions processed. For instance, how many transactions failed a particular rule? What's the seasonal variation in results? You can also use BI to do impact analysis for rule changes very effectively. BI, in this context, is a key part of giving you a measure of adaptive control over your decisions - not just control, but the ability to change and adapt while still controlling it.
One area I think David misses is the use of analytics to enhance decision-making. Data and reports built on it help people make decisions. Predictive analytics and similar data mining approaches help your rules make better decisions.
