February 13, 2007Converging BPM and Business Rules Maturity Models
Tom Debevoise, author of "Business Process Management With a Business Rules Approach", wrote a nice piece for the BPM Institute today - Converging BPM and Business Rules Maturity Models. Tom makes some great points about the parallel nature of maturity with both technologies and the article is well worth a read. A couple of points:
- Sometimes agility requires process agility and sometimes decision agility and sometimes both (see my notes on agility here) so don't assume you need the same level of BPM/BRM maturity for every situation.
- Most organizations are adopting BPM/BPMS in processes that have a greater need for process agility while business rules and BRMS are being adopted in areas of the business where decision agility is key - often in areas where no BPMS is being used.
- The two technologies are starting to converge but for now even customers with both are using them separately rather than together.
- While the maturity might well develop in paralle, don't over-synchronize actual processes and rules
For more on the topic, check out the BPM section of this blog, the BPM section of my other blog or Bruce Silver's great article on the intersection of the two technologies. You can also read some thoughts of mine for 2007.
