Don't BS with BI

Mark Smith over on Intelligent Enterprise had a pithy post about the need to have a strategy when applying BI. Now I am fairly cynical about BI - perhaps even more than Mark - so much so that I am not convinced of the ROI from BI projects. I think to really add value you need not just performance management, Mark's point, but a way to put your performance management into action. You need to develop "intelligent" processes that are smart enough to do real work. For this you need a platform that will enable you to inject analytic insight into your business processes - not just dashboards.

To Mark's other point about strategy. While I think it is true that you need a coherent strategy for becoming more data-driven, I think that a more decision-centric approach allows you to have better top-to-bottom strategic alignment and can provide the basis for strong, strategic execution.
