Customer segmentation in action

This interesting little article on risk banding in UK banks came my way today. This reminds me of the early days of the FICO score where it would simply be displayed on the customer service screen as a "grovel index". While this is interesting it seems to me it is not very useful. It would be much more effective if all the systems the call center representatives used incorporated it into their decision-making so that, for instance, different offers or cross-sells were suggested for different risk bands. Perhaps these banks are using decision technologies to do this but, if they are not, they are missing a trick.
