Agilization - Why CRM Systems Drive Sales People Crazy

Great article Ian!

You're right, CRM often misses the mark for sales people.

I find that most often, management fails to identify the key workflows that they hope to improve, automate, etc...

Essentially, management is hoping for all sorts of metrics but, the sales people use the CRM inconsistently for reasons you've identified, which then makes the metrics inconsistent.

No one is happy.

The answer is to get management and sales expectations identified and aligned before selecting a solution.

- Craig Klein

All Things Social - Social Media Strategy - Before you Jump in

I think your social media strategy has to start with a discussion about what you want it to accomplish, as you noted. Until you understand where you're going, you can't possible identify the best path to get there.

When we work with our clients, we talk about the benefits of using social media and try to help them understand how it can benefit their business specifically. Once they start to see the light, we work on building their strategy.

Too many people see social media or social network and immediately think of Facebook. In reality, I guess what I'm saying is that SM needs to start with an education of what SM really is.

- Jon

There was another, similar article about using analytics to detect crime. This one focused on predicting murderers, about which i blogged Is it scary to allow machines to "make decisions"?.
BPM from a Business Point of View - What is Business Process Management [BPM]?

Scott, I like your comment about most business processes come into being almost by accident. I think that sometimes people forget that, and its ancillary that about 80% of business processes are unstructured (or ad-hoc, human-centric). The BPM tooling and technology focus around structured processes is good - as long as people understand they are looking at only the tip of the business process iceberg.

http://blog.actionbase.com/unstructured-semi-structured-and-structured-processes

You covered a lot of ground in your post but I understand where your coming from ... especially with your extreme programming example - I think your comments are probably more targeted to the agile dev model.

We in the IT space often get accused of blinding the users with heavy notations that, more often than not, they cannot be bothered to try to understand. However, I have to agree with you re the complexity of some of the process diagrams I have seen from technical and process specialists: way over the top for communication purposes.

So, I now have instituted my own checkpoint for any diagram: is there "just enough" information for the consumer to understand or am I on an ego trip?

In essence Anne was stating out loud what we already knew,
but were unable to admit: The complexity of SOA was just too much for most global 2000 companies, and the recent round of budget cuts killed many SOA projects.
Okay, if we're not going to do SOA, than back to the basics I say. I think that it may be a better approach to focus on concepts and approaches that are more simplistic in nature, such as data integration, and perhaps use that as a jumping off point to SOA, or SOA like substance in the future.
Enterprise Architecture Matters - Survey proves that Enterprise Architecture does only IT strategy, solution architecture and project reviews

Your last line says it all: "This is not really EA work and the professionals in the group are IT rather than EA architects."

This isn't enterprise-architecture - it's IT-architecture with (in some cases) a whole-of-enterprise scope.

The survey-questions themselves help to reinforce, so it's not real a survey about EA at all: it's a survey about IT-architecture.

What this survey really tells us is that the IT-centric hijack of the much broader term 'enterprise-architecture' is all but total - which means that we now have no means to describe a true 'architecture of the enterprise'. And we need that broader meaning, even to make sense of IT-architecture: for example, the Open Group are now publicly urging TOGAF architects to break out of the IT-centric box.

IT-architecture is not enterprise-architecture: it is, at best, a minor subset of EA, but that's all. As a profession, EA has a real problem here: if we don't challenge this flagrant misuse of the term 'enterprise-architecture', we are dead in the water. Not good.

- Tom Graves

Ground-Floor BPM - Simulated Benefits

"Simulation delays automation" - only a pure automation vendor could say this, I have heard similar comments before, don't bother with analysis "It is best to simply automate what you have, get rid of the people and then take a look" - Such rush to act before thinking is what has got IT type projects in a mess before, and surely will again. There are times when simulation takes too long costs too much and their are times when it makes sense or is vital. Good vendors should be able to share with you metrics and examples of both when and when not to use. Life is never as simple as appears to being made out here. Given that I don't work in the Simulation industry, but have worked with many clients and vendors who do support and have used it to great effect these observations, whilst obviously true for you and your experience of the world, obviously don't tie in the the view of the world by your "widely respected analyst" - and I happen to share views nearer to his, based on what I have seen.

Of course neither view is in fact right or wrong, they are simply our views based on our experiences. Some people base it on a narrow view e.g. a single customer base, some a wider view based on multiple customers bases and some on a very broad view totally unaligned to any vendors view.

I don't know if your post is written from the perspective of a vendor who does bot feel that analysts are giving them the great time they think they should have because of product weaknesses - I agree that if I did not have something and analysts said I should then I would have to justify why I did not have it. Or, whether it is written to stimulate debate, in which case I suspect an interesting set of comments will ensue.

Kind Regards

IT as a Catalyst for Optimal Business Outcomes - Business value emerging from the SOA Primordial Ooze

In general I think you are right, however regarding the metaphor you used as an example "My first round of golf was a complete failure. Did that make me a failure as a golfer?", well you certainly didn't pay a couple of millions for a green fee or did you?

I think the main problem with SOA projects is what is known as the "Pick of inflated Expectations". If expectations are not set properly to the business (meaning that are set to high) is very likely that what they will eventually get (that if they don’t cancelled the project before actually delivering something) doesn’t meet the expectations...

This problem is mainly the cause of having the “wrong people (probably the wrong architects) selling the solution to the business. In my opinion in many projects you have architects how focus more in the nice “talk than in delivering results quickly, producing quick wins and pragmatic roadmaps to gain confidence from the stake holders in an incremental way

A salesman or an architect that behaves like one shouldn’t be the one facing the business...

I would like one additional requirement for symantic integration - translation and transformation capabilities. I just don't think we'll EVER get everyone using the same schema, and it we did it would mean throwing out everything we already have. I've been watching the ontology standards including FDF, but OWL is considered the more robust and newer standard. Oasis is also working on industry specific ontologies.

- Beth Gold-Bernstein

I agree. BPEL 2.0 is over-rated. Its an artificial attempt by standards bodies to make a grand entrance in the BPMS space. The fact that BPEL 2.0 is almost 100% incompatible with BPEL 1.1 speaks to the fact that these guys are essentially re-inventing the wheel every couple of years.

On another note, what do people think of Pure Play BPMS vendors ? My employer recently licensed Selcian BPMS software from a company called Selcian. One of the new entrants in this space, but seems to have a compelling product vision and good architecture. Their customer service can take some improvement though. Any one has any experience with them ?

- Ravi

At Active Endpoints we're putting an emphasis on BPEL4People (http://www.vosibilities.com/bpel/bpel4people-and-ws-humantask-1-1-reach-public-review/2009/12/15/) and BPMN 2.0 (http://www.vosibilities.com/bpel/bpmn-2-0-with-bpel-searchsoa-weighs-in/2009/12/04/).
Making Sense of Business Information. - What is Data Virtualization?

Once enterprise implements virtual infrastructure and gets over the hump of trusting the cloud security, the next frontier in cloud adaption is simple - what can I actually deploy into the cloud? Tremendous capacity was created by the elasticity of the cloud and by dynamically allocating server CPU, memory, network and bandwidth resources to apps. Once entire enterprise stack has been virtualized - the data virtualization comes naturally. As such, data virtualization is a bit different in nature from the rest of the infrastructure stack; the main idea behind virtualization is object globalization across desperate data silos, access control as already defined in each silo. Some hot new start-ups emerged accomplishing data virtualization for apps in the enterprise (queplix.com), that complete the virtualization infrastructure and actually deliver its benefits. The DV is the actual enabler for the cloud adaption cycle. In addition to the industries Scott mentioned in his article, BI and Enterprise search are the two main industries which are starting to use DV and see direct results: not only they now use a single source of virtual data, but, for example queplix product also merges similar data structures and presents a single virtual entities to the BI and search. Google GSA already works with Queplix DV and most of the BI tools are now compatible with it. I believe and adaption numbers confirm DV as a required stage for any enterprise cloud strategy.

- Steve

Improving accuracy and timelienss of information needed to make decisions will certainly lead to better outcomes. The problem is that organizations are built on inefficient hierarchical structures that can block the flow of critical information. Before software can enter into the mix, the firm needs to design and implement practices that break-down internal barriers.

- David Linthicum

Although there is something magical in modeling I personally don't see this really happening,
You can use modeling for building your skeleton (which can later be used for documentation)
but from there I only see code (components/blocks are still code), I can't really imagine a full blown business app completely modeled and supported for a lasting period of time.

- Asaf Yarkoni

Dennis, you are correct, ActiveMQ is a messaging infrastructure, not an ESB. ActiveMQ is included in Apache ServiceMix (in incubator status) which is an ESB. ActiveMQ and ServiceMix are from the same core group of developers, and both are professionally supported by LogicBlaze (packaged as FUSE).

While ServiceMix and Celtix do compete, Celtix actually ships with ActiveMQ for messaging. One of the most interesting things about open source (IMO) is the environment of "co-opetition".

- brenda michelson

Microsoft is blocking attempts for any such United States states legislations to enact ODF and PDF open standards. Examples: the huge, mud-slinging campaign that occurred in Massachusetts, the ODF "hitmen" in Florida, etc. See: http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/state-state-microsoft-responds-assault/story.aspx?guid=%7BC0D943C4-4ADC-471C-8F87-9181A4EC3E7B%7D "State by State, Microsoft addresses growing ODF threat".

The other thing is that little OOXML reliance on proprietary Microsoft VML and WMF.

"...saving IT from having to pay a house call and letting both groups focus on their own jobs". You have a very healthy view of how IT and business can / does work together - it's more realistic than much of what we've seen at Active Endpoints, where BPM is sold as the perfect combination of IT's and LOB's goals. It is, in many ways, but how it arrives at that can be complicated and racked with unnecessary politics.

- Pat Flanders

"whether they are really thinking about SOA or see it as simply another magic bullet to sell"... I agree it is one of the important question to be asked to a potential software or service vendor. One more thing i would like to add here may be this will be useful to other blog readers, recently "software as a service" company StrikeIron, better to call webservices provider came up with a Add-in product for Excel 2002, they claim "Simply drag–and–drop your Web services fields directly into Excel". What do you think about this. Should we ask our provider that our webservices should be easily accessible from Excel.By calling webservice from Excel may be we can reduce island of data created by end-user.
SMA's Insurance Transformation, Where Strategy Meets Action - Policy Administration - Are We Chasing A 30-Year Old Dream?

Deb has echoed the sentiments of every IT and line-of-business executive I have spoken with about the evolution of IT architecture in the insurance sector. When the basic growth model is acquisition, and IT is told that the “risk of operational disruption needs to be minimized along with time-to-completion for the acquisition process, CIOs are faced with highly complex legacy environments. Today’s financial meltdown is exacerbating the need for agility, improved affiliate collaboration and compliance. There are three main architectural alternatives that are being explored across the insurance sector:

1. Outsourcing – IT Outsourcing (ITO) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) strategies attempt to bypass the pain and suffering of core system replacement by having third-party experts do it.

2. SOA – This approach attempts to wrap legacy applications and expose their interfaces as services. New, XML-based canonicals from ACORD promise to help make this more feasible.

3. Process-specific orchestration – This pushes rule-based logic out from back-end applications and uses predictive analytics and workflow technology to automate processes with existing systems.

Many leading carriers are looking at combinations of these for all customer-facing processes, from new business underwriting to claims management. Insurance companies are beginning to value these kinds of architectural decisions in their diligence for potential acquisitions. Getting the right mix of these strategies right has never been more critical to customer loyalty and operational efficiency than in today’s volatile financial market.

I think the growing complexity of regulation and the need to demonstrate compliance with such regulations proactively is also having an effect. Systems must increasingly be demonstrably compliant and this adds a layer of complexity to their development. I also think the volume of data is forcing the issue but I suspect that is covered in your general complexity.
SOA - Integration Industry Pulse - SOA -- Main Theme at Gartner Application Integration and Web Services Summit

SOA is a technology concept that is well positioned to provide value to the business elements within an organisation. It enables companies to become more responsive to their environments by enabling change to happen faster. SOA also enables Process Driven Integration and this is at the heart of most organisations. Successful process innovation is what will define the companies of the future.

To say SOA has hype may be true if a vendor cannot focus their offering to provide business value and improvements.

Companies that do embrace SOA need to be prepared to engage with the business and to ensure their solutions provide measurable business benefit. This is done using technology, proven methodologies for attaining rapid business value and a constant drive to ensure that these implementations are at the fore of industry best practises.

- Emma Murray

Software Infrastructure for Business Value - With standards, do we get what we deserve?

Neil, I think it all boils down to "have put time and budget aside to participate". Sitting on a standards body is a time consuming activity, with little immediate return. The typical "technology customer" organization can't spare the talent and/or the membership fees. Instead, they push their requirements through key (influencial) vendors. While this isn't optimal, it's the best answer for the current model. So, I'm thinking the real question is how can the models of current standards bodies change to accomodate the "technology customer"? Perhaps a requirements round? Real-World Applicability Review Gates? Free Membership and a Vote? And shouldn't the vendors speaking out for customer involvement work to influence that change? -brenda

- brenda michelson

Tech for Tomorrow - BPM Benefits: Myth or Reality?

Doug, I agree that expectations are often unrealistic. Companies that could not plan lunch should not see BPM technology as a magic bullet. It can not fix the behaviors of your leaders, the chaos of an organization, or the delicate operation of a core system.

I agree with Jim Sinur's comparison of European and US projects - this was the first thing that hit me when I came to work in the US.

When first introducing process improvement concepts into an organization, it may not be bad to get some quick wins with fast and cheap projects. They build consensus and support, and they allow companies to generate a baseline from which they can build. Over-planning complex BPM in a company that still shuffles paper is going to lead to significant wasted effort and missed opportunities.

Only by trying "something" does a company find out the effect it will have on the organization, and may actually highlight other areas they should be investing, such as leadership and organizational development. Process change may not fix everything, as simple process improvement projects reveal alternative pain points.

Normally governance is PMBoK driven. This can take us again to try to trace forward PMI practices to their agile counter-part.

Let me explain my take here of this traceability or translation approach by analogy to language learning. Imagine your first language is Arabic and whenever you communicate in English you first put the Arabic version then you translate to English. You know what, people can find you "ineffective".

Imagine now you understand the English culture and why people behave and express in certain ways. Instead of starting from your first language you directly use English based on this culture understanding. Your communication will be much more effective.

I think the statistics speak for themselves -- it's not hard to contribute and many are. http://www.phishtank.com/stats.php

I would encourage your readers to submit suspected phish emails to PhishTank, too.

Cheers,

Thanks for the link. Reading this, and acknowledging that they're different architectures, I guess the real question is: Does SOA make integration work easier?

- Loraine Lawson
