Following are a few observations from the BPM track of Forrester's Business Process and Application Delivery Forum, underway this week just outside Washington, D.C.

As expected, there's plenty of talk about the emergence of a new career field: that of the business process professional. "We're talking about creating a new competency within the organization," noted speaker Nathaniel Palmer, chief BPM strategist for SRA International and editor in chief of BPM.com. But he and others noted that people with exactly the right mix of skills and expertise remain quite rare: "I see a lot more [enterprise architects] and people who consider themselves SOA than business process professionals," Palmer said.

John Verburgt, director of BPM for the CME Group, described the difficulty of trying to find and hire such people: "Last time I checked, there were zero unemployed BPM professionals out there," he said.

According to a Forrester study involving 28 companies on five continents, "process skills are migrating out of IT and into the business," said Connie Moore, Forrester vice president and research director. She urged attendees to develop BPM centers of excellence to fuel their organizations with the right blend of technical and business expertise. "We have found a correlation between centers of excellence and [BPM initiative] success," she said.

Another Forrester theme: empowerment, driven by the just-published book "Empowered," by Forrester analysts Josh Bernoff and Ted Schadler (Harvard Business Review Press). In their opening keynote address, Forrester analysts Mike Gualtieri and John Rymer, emphasized the importance of recognizing empowered consumers who--thanks to Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other social media--have unprecedented influence over a company's reputation and activities. "They accelerate everything," Rymer said. "Empowered people create crises. Empowered people start chain reactions inside our organizations," forcing businesses to respond faster than ever before.
