Back in August I wrote about Lombardi Software president Phil Gilbert’s view on what it takes to make software business process management (BPM) software. I heard Alan Trefler, Pegasystems CEO and founder, weigh in with another view at the October 20 PegaWorld keynote.
Although different than Gilbert’s, Trefler’s view is additive, not contradictory.
The key word I heard in Trefler’s definition was “role.” He began by saying BPM is better than workflow, is not just automation, and is all about agility (three thumbs down on that word :) ).
He added that the key is providing BPM software that recognized “role” of the person touching it: one user experience for the developer, another for budget planner or HR administrator or call center person working with it, and yet another for the business process analyst. And hopefully the latter is building BPM within the enterprise by working in real time with the users as well as with the developers. There is even a role within Trefler’s view for that sort of collaboration; let’s call it a multi-personality BPM role without getting psychological.
Pegasystems promised some upcoming product announcements along these lines. Stay tuned.
