At the time of designing (and probably automation) process might look good and complete without issues. In reality some new issues, bottlenecks and/or opportunities might arise. You will not be able to resolve them or take advantage of opportunities unless you monitor the process.

Metrics to define success

Implementing your improved process successfully is good for the company and it is good for you. 

ü        -  The company should see lower costs [efficiency] and/or increased revenues [be ahead of the competition]. 

ü        -  You should see support for your next project or a promotion or a raise. 

It is important to find an objective way to define success.  If you allow opinion to define success, there are any number of things that can go wrong.  Pick some measureable metrics that you can use to prove your project is successful. 

More reasons for metrics

You have spent money and time implementing a process management solution.  It is important to monitor that solution for a number of reasons.

ü        -  Is your improved process working as well as you hoped?

ü        -  Now that you are using the new process, do you see things that could be improved?

ü        -  Over time, have conditions changed such that the process should be altered?

ü        -  Have you removed all non-value add activities?

ü        -  Are there activities within the process that can be automated?

I see business process management as an ongoing process.  Change is constant and can alter how your process is working.  Some participants can leave the process while others enter it.  Technology can change.  Your company can move or acquire another company.  All of these will affect how your process is working.  The only way to keep up is to monitor your processes.

Process improvement is a continuous process.  It does not stop when you improve a single process one time.  If you are successful, you can look to improve other processes.  I have companies implementing a process to improve processes.  They need to be reviewed periodically to see if they can be improved.  If someone wants to change a process, they should create a change request.

These are living processes so they need to be monitored...
