Tomorrow's Forecast Calls for Cloud

Just wanted to do a quick summary on an excellent discussion over on the Cloud Forum, Do You Agree With Gartner That A Fifth of Enterprises Will Hold No IT Assets by 2012?

Anthony Gold got it started with: While the key jewels will stay behind the firewall for a while, there's no doubt that enterprises will move in a big way to "clouding"

Andre Yee wrote: Even though it sounds provocative, it probably is quite possible that it'll prove to be true or much closer to plausibility than we might think.

Doug Mow had an interesting take: It seems like there is far more innovation ahead of us than behind us. So, would it still be possible to use technology to lead an industry if the company held no IT assets?

Tarak Modi added: I think the fraction of all IT assets that are "clouded" will be significantly less than one fifth as most medium and large businesses as well as the Fed will be skeptical.

Joe McKendrick: For such a prediction, 2012 is too close, and it doesn't seem plausible. But a few years out, it's not too far-fetched to imagine.

Miko Matsumura simply said: yes.

One point that kept coming up is what exactly Gartner means by enterprise. If they're taking about SMBs, then the probability is a lot higher than if it includes Fortune 500 companies.

The consensus seemed to be that while the cloud is definitely going to be a very important factor of an enterprises future, 2012 is little too soon. And it's going to be a much bigger player for SMBs than for the larger companies. It's with the bigger companies that the private cloud will likely have more of an impact.

Glenn Gruber made an interesting point, asking: "Who will be the first to offer cash for infrastructure". The concept was that cloud providers should be offering trade-ins on existing IT assets as an incentive to move to the Cloud (even in the form of credits for computing resources). Since the Cloud business is subscription by nature, it should be worth it for Cloud providers to incur short term costs to acquire long-term customers.

Currently, I am in Berlin, Germany, and have met some of the local digerati. In talking with Anton Stoutjesdijk, the Chief Content Officer of New Frontier, a digital marketing and translation service, the cloud is a very important aspect of his business now and in the future. As Anton said, "The cloud allows us to promise faster delivery, better pricing etc but it's still a challenge for any company with a high quality focus."
